PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Burndown transformers use a tapped transformer system capable of producing high voltage low current at the one end of the scale and low voltage high current at the other end of the scale. The high voltage is generated through a transformer and rectified to give a maximum output of 14kV DC at around 250mA. The low end of the scale is 50V AC at around 70A. The unit is used in a sequential manner where the current flow is monitored before a decision is made to go to a higher or lower scale.
